Avery Dennison DS Interior Decorative and Privacy Film

Privacy on a glass meeting room, a concealed storage area and a nearly clear UV treatment are different projects. Avery Dennison’s DS interior design family includes four films for those different goals: DS Matte 2 Mil i, DS Black i, DS White i and DS UV Filter i.

The first question is whether you want a view through the glass. We’ll help you compare finishes at a free on-site consultation, where our team measures, brings samples, answers questions and quotes the work.

Four films with different purposes

Manufacturer reference-glass comparison

DS Matte 2 Mil i

  • Visible light transmitted: 72%

  • What to compare: Translucent sandblasted effect

DS Black i

  • Visible light transmitted: 0%

  • What to compare: Black concealment; no transmitted visible light in this reference

DS White i

  • Visible light transmitted: 10%

  • What to compare: White concealment with some transmitted light

DS UV Filter i

  • Visible light transmitted: 87%

  • What to compare: Nearly clear UV filtering; retains the view

Figures are from Avery Dennison’s individual data sheets, using each sheet’s Single-pane column. Avery calculates these values on 3 mm glass with NFRC methodology and LBNL Window 5.2. They are estimates for that reference glazing, not a prediction for your windows. The film names are grade names; they do not state exact installed light transmission.

DS Matte gives glass a translucent, sandblasted appearance. It can soften direct views while allowing daylight to pass. DS Black is a much stronger concealment choice with a black finish. DS White creates a white finish with some light transmission, so it should not be described as identical to black blackout film.

DS UV Filter takes a different approach: it is nearly clear and intended for UV filtering while preserving transparency. It belongs in the DS design family, but it will not create frosted privacy. If the problem is a harsh view or visible activity behind the glass, compare one of the obscuring finishes instead.

Will people still see silhouettes through matte film?

They may, depending on the finish, lighting, distance and what is close to the glass. That is why privacy should be checked from the actual viewing positions. A sample that hides a person across the room can show more detail when someone stands directly beside the pane.

For a meeting room, we consider seated and standing sightlines from the corridor. For a treatment room or bathroom, the required privacy may be more demanding. We’ll discuss those needs without assuming that a frosted appearance alone provides complete visual separation. Our frosted privacy film guide covers these practical questions.

Full coverage or a privacy band?

A band can screen a specific eye-level view while leaving glass clear above and below. Full coverage affects the whole pane. The useful choice depends on door sidelights, floor levels, nearby seating and the direction people approach the room. We measure those relationships during the visit.

Clear openings in a design remain clear openings. They need to be considered as part of the privacy plan, not just the artwork. Any partial-coverage design also needs the appropriate glass and application review. For wider design ideas, see our decorative window film page.

When does black or white concealment make sense?

A storage area behind a glazed facade or an unattractive view may call for more concealment than a translucent matte finish provides. Compare the intended appearance from both sides before deciding. Black and white can change the building’s exterior in very different ways, especially beside untreated windows.

These choices also need a thermal-stress and glass-compatibility check. We assess existing coatings, glazing construction, pane condition, exposure and any shading. A film that provides the appearance you want is only a candidate until it suits the glass. We can discuss property-manager approval and consistent coverage across adjoining panes.

When the view should stay clear

DS UV Filter is the DS option to discuss when the goal is reducing UV exposure while retaining a clear view. It is not the same choice as a solar-control film aimed at a hot west-facing room. If heat or screen glare is also important, we’ll compare a suitable solar family rather than assume that a nearly clear UV treatment solves every problem.

Different DS films have different optical and UV characteristics. The exact product belongs in the quote, together with the proposed coverage, preparation and applicable written warranty. Explore the wider range in our Avery Dennison window film guide.

Questions about Avery DS interior films

Does matte film provide privacy after dark?

It obscures the view rather than relying on a brighter exterior, but nearby shapes and silhouettes may remain visible. We compare the sample under the relevant lighting and sightlines before choosing the finish and coverage.

Do DS White and DS Black block the same amount of light?

No. On Avery’s Single-pane reference calculation, DS White transmits 10% of visible light and DS Black transmits 0%. The choice also changes appearance and needs a glass-compatibility review.

Will DS UV Filter prevent fading?

It can reduce UV exposure, but fading also depends on visible light, heat, material sensitivity and time. It does not eliminate fading or reverse damage that has already occurred.

Can you quote the job without me measuring the glass?

Yes. We measure during the free consultation, bring samples and discuss the layout with you. The on-site quote reflects the selected film, coverage, preparation and access.
