Avery Dennison R Silver Interior Window Film

Avery Dennison R Silver interior film is a solar-control option for people who want a distinctly reflective silver appearance. The two interior choices covered here, R Silver 20i and 35i, offer different balances of daylight, glare reduction and reflection. They are worth comparing for sun-exposed homes and commercial spaces in Southern California where both comfort and the look of the windows matter.

Decide whether reflective silver suits the property

A silver finish can make a noticeable change to a building's facade. Consider it from the sidewalk, from neighboring rooms and from the place where you normally sit. A finish that suits a private office may work differently for a shop that needs customers to see its merchandise through the window.

For a home, think about whether preserving a subtle exterior appearance or emphasizing solar control is more important. For a commercial property, consider consistency across adjacent panes, the visibility of signs and displays, and any property-management requirements. Comparing a sample with the surrounding untreated glass makes these decisions more concrete than viewing a product photograph alone.

R Silver 20i and 35i compared

Avery Dennison's March 2019 technical sheets use 3 mm reference glass and provide separate single- and double-pane estimates. The figures below are from the single-pane column only; they describe the reference glass-and-film combination rather than a guaranteed result for your building.

  • R Silver 20i transmits 18% of visible light, with 80% glare reduction and 78% total solar energy rejected. Its visible reflectance is 61% outside and 62% inside.

  • R Silver 35i transmits 33% of visible light, with 63% glare reduction and 65% total solar energy rejected. Its visible reflectance is 42% outside and 41% inside.

On this reference, 20i provides the darker, more reflective result and stronger solar control; 35i keeps more daylight. That makes 35i a useful comparison when you want relief from a bright window but remain concerned about darkening the room. The right balance still depends on the actual glass and how you use the space.

Total solar energy rejected is a window-performance figure. It is not a percentage reduction in your electricity bill or a promised room-temperature change. Building exposure, other windows, shading and cooling use all affect the eventual experience.

Consider reflections inside the room

The room-side figures above are an important part of this choice. R Silver has a reflective interior appearance as well as a reflective exterior. When lamps or ceiling lights are bright against a dark outdoor scene, reflections of the room can become more noticeable on the glass.

If a clear evening view is a priority, compare the finish with Avery Dennison DR OptiTune and discuss the differences using samples. Do not choose solely by darkness or the solar-control number. Our Avery Dennison window-film guide connects the other family choices.

Daytime privacy also depends on the relative lighting. A brighter exterior can make a reflective window harder to see through from outside, but that effect can reverse when lights are on indoors after dark. Use our privacy film guide to plan reliable visual screening where needed. For a bedroom or private meeting room, include the nighttime requirement in the discussion.

Keep interior, exterior and safety products distinct

R Silver 20i and 35i are interior-applied solar-control films. An exterior application requires a product designed for outdoor exposure and an assessment of the glazing. Visit the Avery Dennison exterior-film guide if outside installation is part of your project.

Avery's separately named R Silver safety constructions serve a different specification. Ordinary 20i or 35i should not be substituted into a safety or security design because the name or color looks similar. For those objectives, start with the Avery safety and security guide and discuss the whole window assembly.

Check suitability and warranty before installation

We assess the glazing, including existing coatings, insulated units, condition and exposure, before recommending a film. If the property has appearance requirements, have the proposed finish reviewed through the applicable process. A product sample is useful evidence for that discussion, but it is not a blanket approval for every building or glass type.

Avery Dennison's North American interior warranty schedule lists 15 years for commercial R Silver 20i/35i and conditional limited-lifetime residential film coverage. The residential term applies while the original consumer owns and lives in the home and is nontransferable. Installation eligibility, approved film-to-glass applications and exclusions matter. Avery's warranty program also specifies registration and customer receipt documentation. Review the actual written coverage for the proposed project.

R Silver interior questions

Is R Silver 20i darker than 35i?

Yes, on the March 2019 sheets' single-pane 3 mm reference glass, 20i transmits less visible light. Compare samples to see whether the daylight tradeoff suits your rooms.

Is R Silver interior film installed outside?

No. The 20i and 35i products discussed here are intended for interior installation. Exterior projects need their own product selection and compatibility assessment.

Will R Silver prevent people from seeing in at night?

It does not provide dependable nighttime privacy. With the interior brighter than outdoors, people outside may see in. Plan separate screening for privacy-sensitive spaces.

Can the same film go on every double-pane window?

No single blanket recommendation fits every insulated unit. Glass construction, coatings and condition need to be checked against the applicable film-to-glass guidance.
